Join KHS and the African American Genealogy Group of Kentucky as we host a panel session on researching Kentucky African American Roots! This expert panel will explore the resources and Kentucky specific strategies for locating your African American ancestors. The session will take place on Saturday, February 17th, 2018, 2-4 p.m. at the KHS’ Center for Kentucky History – It will be held in the Keeneland Gallery, which is the current home of the Kentucky Freetowns exhibit. Please plan to arrive a little early to review the exhibit images – many subjects are unidentified, and we could use your expertise identifying Freetown residents of Central Kentucky! The panel members will be announced very soon, so stay tuned!

Pre-Registration is not required.

Always running out of research time? The Martin F. Schmidt Research Library will be open for extended hours on Friday August 3rd, from 5-9pm! Spend an evening researching your ancestors in Kentucky’s largest genealogy library! Our holdings span all of Kentucky’s 120 counties and include published works; archival records such as manuscripts, photographs, maps, atlases; oral history interviews; and microfilm.

Cost: $8 for KHS members OR $10 for non-members (general admission not required for the evening hours, but may be required if you arrive for research during regular open hours of 10-5.) Join KHS staff as they take you through a Family History Writing and Publishing Boot Camp! This event is part one of a 2 part series designed to guide you through the steps of sharing your family history for future generations. Part I (all day) will cover intense lessons on writing your family narrative – establishing focus, readability/story flow, supporting details and citations. As part of this day, we will also advise on digitizing supplemental content, copyright, and the various ways you can publish what you write. At the end of the class, you will be equipped with the knowledge and abilities to start your publication journey. For Part II (afternoon only) on November 3rd, we will meet to discuss your writings as produced over the past month, and work with you on publishing a product to have ready for sharing with family in time for the Holidays!

Part I event runs from 10:30am-12:30pm AND 2-4pm. Cost: $24 for KHS members OR $30 + $8 general admission for non-members. Part II (November 3rd, 2-4:30pm) is a separate event with its own fee, but a package discount would apply if purchasing both events. A Full-Day “Collage” of Genealogy Presentations and Demonstrations
Bring your lunch and stay for the day to learn about multiple aspects of genealogy in this special 2nd Saturday Genealogy event. 
Pamela Lyons Brinegar, CG ® is a Lexington-based, board-certified genealogy researcher, writer, and lecturer specializing in central and eastern Kentucky. She holds an MA in sociocultural anthropology and is executive director emerita of an international association of regulatory officials. Among her topics for this event: House Histories – Whether old or new, houses have stories to tell. Untangling those mysteries requires a combined journalistic/genealogical research approach to draw answers from public records, archives, and many other resources. This session will cover the rapidly growing number of free online images of deeds, estate and tax records, court orders, newspapers, and monographs. Examples of 19th- and 20th-century house histories will illustrate methods for developing your own family stories.
