This expert panel will explore the resources and Kentucky specific strategies for locating your African American ancestors. The session will take place on Saturday, February 17th, 2018, 2-4 p.m. at the KHS’ Center for Kentucky History – It will be held in the Keeneland Gallery, which is the current home of the Kentucky Freetowns exhibit. Always running out of research time? The Martin F. Schmidt Research Library will be open for extended hours on Friday August 3rd, from 5-9pm! Spend an evening researching your ancestors in Kentucky’s largest genealogy library! Our holdings span all of Kentucky’s 120 counties and include published works; archival records such as manuscripts, photographs, maps, atlases; oral history interviews; and microfilm.
Cost: $8 for KHS members OR $10 for non-members (general admission not required for the evening hours, but may be required if you arrive for research during regular open hours of 10-5.) Join KHS staff as they take you through a Family History Writing and Publishing Boot Camp! This event is part one of a 2 part series designed to guide you through the steps of sharing your family history for future generations. Part I (all day) will cover intense lessons on writing your family narrative – establishing focus, readability/story flow, supporting details and citations. As part of this day, we will also advise on digitizing supplemental content, copyright, and the various ways you can publish what you write. At the end of the class, you will be equipped with the knowledge and abilities to start your publication journey. For Part II (afternoon only) on November 3rd, we will meet to discuss your writings as produced over the past month, and work with you on publishing a product to have ready for sharing with family in time for the Holidays!
Part I event runs from 10:30am-12:30pm AND 2-4pm. Cost: $24 for KHS members OR $30 + $8 general admission for non-members. Part II (November 3rd, 2-4:30pm) is a separate event with its own fee, but a package discount would apply if purchasing both events. Join us in the Martin F. Schmidt Research Library for a Piecing Together History open house (10am-5pm) – focusing on Family Bible Records! Did you know that the Kentucky Historical Society has one of the largest family Bible collections in the state? These Family Bibles can be located throughout the library and archival storage, including:
- Over 200 original Family Bible Records in archival storage with some images online at kyhistory.com
- An eleven volume set of photocopied records contributed by past library patrons
- Additional copies of Family Bible Records in our surname vertical files and within local published histories
- Transcribed Bible Records in print editions of Kentucky Ancestors and The Register
Throughout the day you will be able to view the original Bible Records, explore the other holdings, and help research the families listed. Plus – if you have a Family Bible in your collection which contains family/genealogy information, please consider bringing it along to have digitized! The images scanned that day will be shared with other researchers through our Digital Collections Catalog.

Join our Library staff for the next level of the D.N.A. Interest Group (D.I.G.) – Book Club Edition! In 2018, we hosted a 6 month long D.I.G. Chat (DNA Interest Group) – For 9 months of 2019 (March-November), we will be taking the D.I.G. concept further for more advanced talks through book discussions.
With the Book Club Edition, you have two levels of participation to choose from – both happening at the same time. Pick your level and register for that class. Seating is limited and each class will be capped at 20 participants.

Once you register for one of the classes, it is your responsibility to acquire the book selected for your class choice. Print or electronic editions are permitted. Some print copies may be available in our 1792 Store closer to the start of classes. Don’t worry, if you want to take both classes, our plan is to repeat this series next year, so those in the beginner class can take the advanced level in 2020.
The dates and times of both classes will be the same: 2-4 p.m. on the 4th Saturday of the month, March – November.
