DeborahProfilePictureThe Kentucky Genealogical Society joins the Kentucky Historical Society with a series of free family history workshops each month at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History.

This October, join us in welcoming guest speaker, Deborah Campisano, as she teaches us about taking the next step in our research journey!

Session 201:  Beyond the Basics – Digging Deeper — Part 1

Once beyond the basics in our family history research, we may be faced with common surname hurdles or a bounty of Smiths in the same place! The lack of vital records also poses challenges! What to do? This session will illustrate techniques for distinguishing ancestors of the same name and finding substitutes when no vital records exist.

Session 202:  Beyond the Basics – Digging Deeper — Part 2

In the early stages of our research, we’ve learned to use resources such as censuses, wills, vital records, deeds, and published family histories. If these records haven’t resolved your family history mysteries, it’s time to dig deeper! This session will focus on some lesser used county court records that pack a brick-wall busting punch!

About the Speaker:

Deborah Lord Campisano, (BA History), has over 30 years of genealogical research experience — 23 as a professional. She completed course work in genealogical studies at IGHR at Samford in Birmingham, AL, and SLIG in Salt Lake City. This summer (2014), she has focused on genetic genealogy at the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh and the Institute for Genetic Genealogy in Washington, D.C. She is a frequent lecturer on methodology at local, state and regional conferences.

Morning session runs from 10:30-11:30 a.m., followed by an hour break for lunch. Second session runs from 12:30-1:30 p.m. A light box lunch is available at a cost of $7 payable at the door when requested in advance. Registration for these free workshops is strongly encouraged. However, walk-ins are welcome. ***LUNCH RESERVATIONS MUST BE MADE BY NOON OF THE PRECEDING FRIDAY.***

Piecing Together History: Frankfort Faces & Places – The Collection of J.J. King @ Kentucky Historical Society

Collage2The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) will host a free knowledge-sharing community event in Frankfort, Ky., on Saturday, October 25, 2014. Help is needed to identify the people, places and events photographed by J. J. King from the 1910s through the 1940s. There will be one open-house knowledge-sharing session from 2:00-4:00 p.m., at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History, 100 W. Broadway, Frankfort.

John J. King lived and worked in Frankfort, KY. In addition to his work as a photographer, he served as president of the State National Bank in Frankfort, was the owner of the Frankfort Hotel, served as an instructor at the Cardome Academy in Georgetown, and was one of Paul Sawyier’s benefactors.

The collection contains approximately 400 photographs spanning from 1900 through 1942. The images are primarily of Frankfort, KY including downtown streets, parades, the Kentucky River, sports (swimming, boating, football, horseback riding, archery, baseball, tennis), the Singing Bridge, the Old State Capitol, the New Capitol, Governor’s mansion, distilleries, schools, locks, post office, transportation, YMCA, construction projects, the gun club, small business and the Kentucky State Arsenal.  Many of the pictures are of friends and family of J. J. King in these various settings and could include images of our very own Paul Sawyier.

Historians, neighbors, genealogists and other community members are needed to help expand the knowledge base surrounding this collection, to better document the people, places and events represented in the J. J. King Photographs. KHS is hoping members of the community will come together to assist with identification and contextual information.

The images have been digitized and cataloged and are available for researchers during and after the event. To view any part of the collection, visit kyhistory.com and search for “Graphic 12”. For those who cannot attend, please submit image specific information via the comments section at the bottom of each image.

**PLEASE NOTE DATE CHANGE! NOVEMBER WORKSHOP IS ALWAYS ON THE FIRST SATURDAY!!**

The Kentucky Genealogical Society joins the Kentucky Historical Society in hosting a series of free family history workshops each month at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History.

This November, join us in welcoming guest speaker, Dr. Patrick Lewis, as he explores the wondrous treasures discovered in the new Civil War Governors of Kentucky Digital Documentary Edition!

Session 1: Civil War Social Networking: 21st Century Reconstructions of 19th Century Kentucky

The Civil War Governors of Kentucky Digital Documentary Edition (CWG-K) is building a research database that will allow researchers to track individual Kentuckians, understand their social and kinship networks, economic systems, patterns of political patronage, and more. Learn how CWG-K is reconstructing the lives and worlds of tens of thousands of heretofore voiceless Kentuckians—women and men, slave and free, soldiers and civilians, unionists and rebels—by identifying, imaging, transcribing, annotating, and linking together over 30,000  Civil War-era documents from archives across the nation. Enjoy this sneak-peak of a powerful tool that will change the way genealogists, historians, and teachers access, understand, and interpret Kentucky history.

Session 2: Civil War CSI: Murder, Politics, and the Louisville Horse Pile

CWG-K will provide access to more than 30,000 documents, but even one on its own can raise new and fascinating questions. This session will interactively analyze an 1864 murder in Louisville. The case seems open-and-shut, but what clues should historians be picking up on here? What can this case tell us about 19th Century Kentucky—urban life, public health, the economy, immigration and ethnicity, civil-military interaction? What about that world is familiar to us? What questions jump out that need further research?  What—or who— have historians overlooked in Civil War Kentucky? What can CWG-K help us learn about the dark side of a Kentucky we think we know so well?

About the Speaker:

Patrick Lewis is Assistant Editor of the Civil War Governors of Kentucky Digital Documentary Edition. He is a Kentucky native and graduate of Transylvania University. He received his Ph.D. in History from the University of Kentucky in 2012. He worked previously for the National Park Service and has been at KHS since 2010. He is the author of For Slavery and Union: Benjamin Buckner and Kentucky Loyalties in the Civil War, coming in the Spring of 2015 from the University Press of Kentucky.

Morning session runs from 10:30-11:30 a.m., followed by an hour break for lunch. Second session runs from 12:30-1:30 p.m. A light box lunch is available at a cost of $7 payable at the door when requested in advance. Registration for these free workshops is strongly encouraged. Collage2The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) will host a free knowledge-sharing community event in Frankfort, Ky., on Saturday, November 29, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Attendees are invited to view photographs from the KHS Collections featuring various distilleries and the distilling process during the first half of the twentieth century. The “Piecing Together History” event will be at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History, Martin F. Schmidt Research Library, 100 W. Broadway.

For this event, KHS will select some of the most complex images we have featuring the distilling process. We need the public’s help in improving the descriptive information about the photographs. Our hope is that local experts, distilling aficionados, and Bourbon connoisseurs will attend to share their knowledge about the detailed process of distilling Bourbon in Kentucky. Selected images needing identification will include employees, equipment, and activities, but we are also interested in learning more about the social traditions unique to the various companies such as parades, car and horse races, and company baseball teams. Some of the distilleries featured in these photos include: Old Taylor, Labrot & Graham, Old Dignity, Old Joe, Stagg, Old Crow, Old Fitzgerald, O.F.C.

The images from various collections have been digitized and cataloged and are available for researchers during and after the event. To view any part of the collection, visit kyhistory.com and search for “Bourbon Industry.” People who cannot attend the Nov. 29th event can submit image-specific information using the comments section at the bottom of each online image. Anyone with a specific question about the photographs should contact the KHS Reference Desk at 502-564-1792, ext. 4460, or KHSrefdesk@ky.gov.

Linda McCauley

The Kentucky Genealogical Society joins the Kentucky Historical Society in hosting a series of free family history workshops each month at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History.

This December, join us in welcoming guest speaker, Linda McCauley, as she explores multi-faceted topic of Online Publishing!

Topic: Online Publishing: Get Your Genealogy Out There

After lots of research and hard work, you have hundreds (thousands?) of names, dates, places, stories, photos, and more. Why not share the wealth – and maybe connect with some cousins in the process? You can do it through online publishing.

Don’t let that phrase “online publishing” scare you. Options run the gamut:
  • a simple message board post
  • uploading files at various online tree websites
  • a blog
  • your own full-blown personal genealogy website
You don’t have to be a tech guru or a professional writer to have an online genealogy presence. Learn how online publishing could lead to knocking out some of those bricks in your walls. (both sessions will cover this broad topic of ‘online publishing’)
About the Speaker:

Linda McCauley is a local Kentucky researcher from the Mt. Vernon area who has been documenting her family tree since 2001. As a way to share her progress, she has been blogging about the results since 2009 at Documenting the Details. Linda is also the Vice President of the Kentucky Genealogical Society, Technology Committee Chair, Program Committee Chair, and teaches the KGS Tech sessions held right after the Second Saturday workshops. Linda has taken on the role of Marketing Committee Chair for the Federation of Genealogical Societies’ 2015 Conference in Salt Lake City, and was recently appointed to the FGS Board of Directors.

Morning session runs from 10:30-11:30 a.m., followed by an hour break for lunch. Second session runs from 12:30-1:30 p.m. A light box lunch is available at a cost of $7 payable at the door when requested in advance. Registration for these free workshops is strongly encouraged. Help is needed to tell the story of the New State Capitol during its first 30 years.  There will be one open-house knowledge-sharing session from 1:00-4:00 p.m., at the Kentucky State Capitol Rotunda.

KHS staff have selected from the collections photographs illustrating the construction of the Capitol and portraits of legislators and staff who governed between 1900 and 1930.  Many of the images have only basic descriptive information and KHS staff are seeking stories that illustrate the contributions made by Kentuckians throughout the state.

Historians, neighbors, journalists and other community members are invited to share their knowledge of the people and events that shaped the beginning of the 20th century in Kentucky.

All of the images used in this event have been digitized and cataloged and are available for researchers during and after the event.
