Grissim2The Kentucky Genealogical Society joins the Kentucky Historical Society with a series of free family history workshops each month at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History.

This September, join us in welcoming guest speakers, Cheri Daniels and Kary Stackelbeck, as they teach us about researching Cemeteries and your rights of access/preservation.

Session 1: Cemetery Research – Digging Deeper

KHS Senior Librarian, Cheri Daniels, will explore the rich details of cemetery research. Some topics covered: iconography, death certificate variations, cemetery records, burial location information, online/offline resources, burial embellishment customs.

Session 2: Preserving Our Cemeteries, Preserving Our Heritage

Dr. Kary Stackelbeck from the Kentucky Heritage Council will discuss cemetery preservation and access: Thousands of historic cemeteries dot the landscape across Kentucky–from rural family plots to larger, well-maintained public and church burial grounds.  And yet, as development spreads, these spaces are increasingly being encroached upon, forcing us to address questions of appropriate treatment measures.  This presentation provides some basic information on cemetery preservation, including information on laws that protect burial grounds, those that allow for their relocation, and the rights of citizens who wish to maintain them.

Morning session runs from 10:30-11:30 a.m., followed by an hour break for lunch. Second session runs from 12:30-1:30 p.m. A light box lunch is available at a cost of $7 payable at the door when requested in advance. Registration for these free workshops is strongly encouraged. However, walk-ins are welcome. ***LUNCH RESERVATIONS MUST BE MADE BY NOON OF THE PREVIOUS FRIDAY.***

DeborahProfilePictureThe Kentucky Genealogical Society joins the Kentucky Historical Society with a series of free family history workshops each month at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History.

This October, join us in welcoming guest speaker, Deborah Campisano, as she teaches us about taking the next step in our research journey!

Session 201:  Beyond the Basics – Digging Deeper — Part 1

Once beyond the basics in our family history research, we may be faced with common surname hurdles or a bounty of Smiths in the same place! The lack of vital records also poses challenges! What to do? This session will illustrate techniques for distinguishing ancestors of the same name and finding substitutes when no vital records exist.

Session 202:  Beyond the Basics – Digging Deeper — Part 2

In the early stages of our research, we’ve learned to use resources such as censuses, wills, vital records, deeds, and published family histories. If these records haven’t resolved your family history mysteries, it’s time to dig deeper! This session will focus on some lesser used county court records that pack a brick-wall busting punch!

About the Speaker:

Deborah Lord Campisano, (BA History), has over 30 years of genealogical research experience — 23 as a professional. She completed course work in genealogical studies at IGHR at Samford in Birmingham, AL, and SLIG in Salt Lake City. This summer (2014), she has focused on genetic genealogy at the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh and the Institute for Genetic Genealogy in Washington, D.C. She is a frequent lecturer on methodology at local, state and regional conferences.

***LUNCH RESERVATIONS MUST BE MADE BY NOON OF THE PRECEDING FRIDAY.***

Pamela Lyons Brinegar, CG ® is a Lexington-based, board-certified genealogy researcher, writer, and lecturer specializing in central and eastern Kentucky. She holds an MA in sociocultural anthropology and is executive director emerita of an international association of regulatory officials. Among her topics for this event: House Histories – Whether old or new, houses have stories to tell. Untangling those mysteries requires a combined journalistic/genealogical research approach to draw answers from public records, archives, and many other resources. This session will cover the rapidly growing number of free online images of deeds, estate and tax records, court orders, newspapers, and monographs. Examples of 19th- and 20th-century house histories will illustrate methods for developing your own family stories.
