The African American Genealogy Group of Kentucky and the Scott County Genealogical Society are joining forces to bring J. Mark Lowe to Frankfort for a free afternoon session about researching African American ancestors.

This March, join us in welcoming guest speaker, Gail Jackson Miller, as she tracks down those elusive Kentucky ancestors – including the notorious Harpe Brothers!
Session 1: Born in Kentucky
Your ancestor was born in Kentucky; but where? Learn techniques for finding the Kentucky origins of families who moved west.
Gail Jackson Miller, CG, is a professional genealogist and lecturer specializing in Kentucky and Tennessee research. Gail has more than 40 years experience in genealogy. She grew up in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky with all of her family lines extending back to the early 1800s in Kentucky or Tennessee. Her personal research continues to enhance her general knowledge of families and records. Gail has over 20 years of professional experience working with clients with Kentucky and Tennessee roots with ties to surrounding states. In 1999, Gail became a board certified genealogist through the Board for Certification of Genealogists.
Morning session runs from 10:30-11:30 a.m., followed by a 15 minute break. Second session runs from 11:45-12:45 p.m. Registration for these free workshops is strongly encouraged. This April, join us in welcoming guest speaker, Debra Renard, as she introduces us to the wonderful world of DNA!
Session 1: The ABCs of DNA
This session will teach attendees about the basic genetic terminology & concepts, the main types of tests available for genealogical purposes, their inheritance patterns and their limitations. They will also learn how to identify their testing goal and which test would best meet that goal
Session 2: Why Y? Patrilineal DNA Research for Genetic Genealogy
Topics covered will include Y-DNA inheritance, types of Y tests, testing objectives, testing company offerings, using results.
Debra Renard is a full-time genealogical researcher and lecturer, andthe founder of Eureka! Genealogy. She is working toward a specialization as a genetic genealogist. She began researching her own family history in 2008 and discovered a good part of her heritage is from hearty pioneer lines, looking toward First Family status in western Pennsylvania and Ohio.
She is the editor of the Louisville Genealogical Society’s Lines and By-Lines Quarterly, the Treasurer of the Kentucky Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists, a board member of the Kentucky Genealogical Society, a member of the John Marshall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a co-founder and leader of the Louisville Genetic Genealogy Special Interest Group.
Debbie has lived many lives in one, having degrees in Wildlife Biology, Regional Resource Planning, music, and an MBA. She has had careers as a piano teacher, a boutique owner, a technical trainer, a computer programmer, a supply chain expert (what?), and, finally, her true calling as a genealogist!

The Kentucky Genealogical Society joins the Kentucky Historical Society in hosting a series of free genealogy workshops each month at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History.
This June, join KHS and KGS for a buffet of family history sessions, sponsored by the RootsTech Conference!
In February 2015, the annual RootsTech Conference took place in Salt Lake City, Utah. Several sessions were selected for recording to be shared online and at Family History Fairs around the world. The Kentucky Historical Society has been selected as one of the participating venues!
What this means: On June 13th, our regularly scheduled Second Saturday will take on a slightly different shape. Our sessions will begin and end at the same time (10:30AM-12:45PM.) However, during that time, we will be providing three different video sessions each hour, giving you the option to choose which session you want to attend! The sessions will take place concurrently every hour in three separate rooms throughout the History Center, with different topics in each room; Just like a real conference!
This event is FREE, but registration is REQUIRED!
