For several months, KHS staff has been puzzling over this 1930 photograph from the Wolff, Gretter, Cusick and Hill Studios Negatives Collection (Graphic 2). This image of a two story building, possibly located in Frankfort, KY, is mysteriously labeled “F.M.I. Col.” Research suggests this building might be part of the either the Frankfort Military Institute or the Feeble Minded Institute, but nothing conclusive has yet to come to light. In Frankfort the FMI was well known as the Feeble-Minded Institute. The Kentucky Military Institute (there was no Frankfort Military Institute) was located where the Stewart Home is now, but KMI had long since moved from that site by 1930. FMI Col. could be an abbeviation for FMI Collection. Were there other photos that might yield clues? I don’t remember this particular building, but it has the same institutional character that many of the buildings had on the FMI campus.

Unfortunately, this image was the only one in the envelope. However, we now know that KDLA has a picture album about the Feeble Minded Institute and so we will be checking with them to see if this building appears. Thanks for your help on this!

Just ran across this while doing some like research. This building is located on Old Glen’s Creek Rd. near US 60 in Frankfort. It is currently a state government office. It is on the site of the Feeble Minded Institute and the only remaining building. All other structures where removed in the 70’s for the building of the KY Human Resource building.

Thank you for the great info Tami! I think we may need to run out there and snap a pic for comparison fun. It would be great to see how the building has changed over the years after its new appropriation of use. To know this is the only remaining building from the FMI is very handy historical info.
