Happy New Year from the KAO editorial staff! Today’s History Mystery comes to us from Georgetown, Scott County, 1912. This mystery is a colorful reminder of how the previous generations wished each other a Happy New Year. After admiring the lovely imagery on the front, take a gander at the backside of this postcard. Addressed to Mr. Thurman Mallory of 112 W. Main St., the sender of this postcard claims to be his “true friend”, Mae. Some of the information is rather common, but there is discussion about a “Beloved Friend”. So, does anyone know anything more about the Mallory family of Georgetown? In 1912, how old would Mr. Mallory be? Clue: Where was he in the 1910 census? Since the postcard itself comes from a larger collection of Jamie Bronston Long, you can get a glimpse of some other postcards from this family collection by viewing MSS 59 in the Digital Collections Catalog. I knew J. Thurman Mallory. He was my Grandfather, Tommy Mallory’s half brother. His “Beloved Friend” was Elizabeth Robertson Mallory. They were married for well over 50 years. Both are now deceased of course. Because this is from the collection of Jamie Bronston Long, I am sure this is my Uncle Thurman and Aunt Elizabeth. My mother, now 92, knew Jamie Long to be a dear friend of Aunt Elizabeth’s and possible one of ther Sunday School members.
Uncle Thurman would have been about 25 and as I said the “Beloved Friend” was my aunt.
